recommended tarot decks + books

Tarot cards first originated in Italy in the early fifteenth century. The cards were originally developed for playing games. French esotericists in the late eighteenth century began utilizing the cards for divination.

In the 1920s, the Rider Waite Smith Tarot was created by Pamela Coleman-Smith and Arthur Waite. Coleman-Smith and Waite were members of the esoteric society, The Order of The Golden Dawn. Many modern tarot decks are based on the Rider Waite Smith Tarot which is also known as the Smith Waite Tarot Deck.

I am an avid collector of tarot decks. They are beautiful works of art to me, wrapped up in a tiny (but mighty!) package. Here are a few of my favorite decks and some of the books that I highly recommend.

  • Book cover titled 'Archetypal Tarot' by Mary K. Greer, featuring an illustration of a figure in green robes standing on a wheel, with the subtitle 'What Your Birth Card Reveals About Your Personality, Path, and Potential'.
  • Book cover for 'Tarot: Mastering the Art of Intuitive Reading' by Theresa Reed. The cover features a stylized illustration of a person in elaborate clothing, holding a tarot card.
  • The cover of 'The New Tarot Handbook' by Rachel Pollack features a depiction of a tarot card with a woman holding a sword, standing outdoors with mountains and a bright sun in the background. Surrounding it are several other tarot cards with various images, all with a vintage illustration style.
  • The cover of a Tarot and Divination Cards deck titled 'A Visual Archive' by Lanina Barber. The artwork features a woman with long red hair, sitting by a body of water, pouring water from two golden vessels.
